Decimals
We have begun our new topic on decimals in maths. After completing fractions we are using our knowledge of fractions to learn about decimals. We have been using base ten to understand the concept of a decimal being smaller than 1 whole.
Can we divide the 1 whole? We imagined the 1000 base ten block as 1 whole as it is easier to visualize breaking this up.
We can divide the 1 whole by 10 which gives us 1/10, tenths, 0.1 (100 block as 10 of these make the 1 whole - 1000-block)
We can divide the 1 whole by 100 which gives us 1/100, hundredths, 0.01 (10 block as 100 of these make the 1 whole)
We can divide the 1 whole by 1000 which gives us 1/1000, thousandths, 0.001 (1 block as 1000 of these make up the 1 whole)
