Georgia O'Keeffe Inspired

This half term, the children have been learning a range of shading techniques. To conclude our life cycle of plants science topic, we studied Georgia O'Keeffe's artwork of enlarged flowers. What they produced was fantastic - they're all budding artists!

A chemical reaction: reversible or irreversible?

This week in SITE, we looked at reversible and irreversible changes. For our experiment we mixed bicarbonate of soda and vinegar. Mixing these materials together caused a chemical reaction and created a gas - mixing is irreversible!

Chinese New Year

Year 5 have immersed themselves in the Chinese New Year this week. They've created a brilliant range of Chinese inspired artwork; practised using chopsticks; dressed up in traditional Chinese clothing and learnt about Chinese New Year legends.

How do you separate materials?

In SITE today, the children learnt about many different ways to separate materials such as: filtration, evaporation, distillation and many more. Year 5 were then given 'Alien Soup' consisting of water, sand, rice and paperclips. The children had to separate the materials to their original states…

Soluble or insoluble?

In SITE we learnt about new vocabulary: soluble, insoluble, solute, solvent and solution. The baking power (solute) mixed with the hot water (solvent) caused a surprising reaction!

SITE LAUNCH

Year 5 have begun their SITE focus on 'properties and changes of materials' with an experimental observation on thermal conductors and insulators. Year 5 thought the ice on the metal would stay a solid for longer as it feels cold, but they learnt that heat/energy always travels to a colder place.…
