WW2 Morning: Learning about rationing!
Class Six had a very exciting morning. We had a special history lesson learning all about rationing in the Second World War. We did this lesson in two parts; one part consisted of the children participating in a cooking lesson baking carrot cookies using a rationed recipe (we used carrots from our Victory Garden that we planted in July). During this part of the lesson, we discussed how the recipes would have been adapted to maximise food usage such as using carrots as they are a sweet vegetable, reducing the sugar and butter elements of a recipe and using the peel to feed the pigs! In the second part of the lesson, children learnt about rationing in Britain and the impact it had on families. To do this, children considered their current consumption of each food then measured out the rationed amounts to compare. Children had some very surprising findings! They also had the opportunity to do some independent reseach and finally, taste their delicious cookies. An absolutely wonderful day of learning!
