Year 6 Evacuation Day
Class 6 relaunched their WWII topic with a role play day. The children came in dressed as evacuees, complete with evacuation tags. We then travelled to the countryside (outdoor classroom) to learn all about Operation Pied Piper, where we completed activities including 'work on the farm' alongside lots of valuable learning discussions. Mrs Potter played the role of our billeting officer; inspecting the children and ensuring they were all homed.
We ended our morning developing our empathy skills by imagining the thoughts and feelings of the children who were actually separated from their parents using letters from our own parents. This is always a highlight of the day, as sometimes the role play aspects can feel a little bit silly, but hearing how much parents, family and pets would miss us really helped convey how serious this situation would have been.
In the afternoon, we reflected on our mornings learning and created some freeze frame photos to reflect the emotions and situations children may have experienced. We also tried some carrot fudge, which was a Christmas treat made during times of rationing (a mixture of plain jelly and grated carrot) but didn't really taste like a treat! A game of football was enjoyed as we used our extra break time from our 100% attendance award.
A brilliant day to get us excited for our second half of WWII learning where we will be focussing on the British homefront. Thank you to parents for helping with costumes and letters. We have lots more exciting learning opportunities coming up so watch this space!
