Learning about the Holocaust

In our topic and reading lessons this week, we explored the tragic, but important subject of the Holocaust. The children learnt the escalation of events designed to persecute Jewish citizens in Nazi-occupied Europe and minority groups. We then had an interesting and thought-provoking discussion about these events, why other people let them happen and the by-stander effect, how educating ourselves about these tragedies can enable us to be better global citizens to help stop such things happening again. During our reading lesson, we read the emotional story of Erika, whose parents were victims of the Holocaust, and how it impacted her life. This opportunity to humanise the people affected allowed us to remember that 6 million lives is a number that represents 6 million people who had stories and families.

This can be an emotive lesson and is always adapted to be age appropriate, and parents informed of the subject so children have an opportunity to reflect at home. The Year 6 children dealt with this topic with incredible maturity and respect. We're very proud of them.
