SITE - Building Model Shelters

The children have been carrying out research in SITE this week to support their understanding of habitats in the local environment. Our class project is to help a local farmer build safe shelters for different animals to hibernate in throughout winter. The children have been investigating the outdoor area during their science lessons and recording the different types of habitats they could find e.g. the pond and wooded area. We also categorised our findings into ‘living’, ‘non-living’ and things that have never been alive.

The children then used a variety of construction equipment to build model shelters. The children were given little guidance and instead had to discuss with their partners what they thought a good animal shelter would need. We then evaluated our models and picked out parts that would be needed for our real designs and parts that were not so practical.
