Class Trip to Thwaite Mills

Class 6 enjoyed a brilliant class trip to Thwaite Mills, Leeds. It was a trip designed to enrich our knowledge and understanding of WW2 with a particular focus on life on the homefront and communication during war. Our day started with students coming into school dressed as a child in WW2 - all of our class looked wonderful with some amazing attention to detail made (thank you parents!).

We then had a jam-packed day of super activities:

  • We learnt about wartime at home, understanding the effects of rationing, tried on gas masks and heard a real-life air raid siren before rushing into an Anderson shelter.
  • We discovered many forms of communication in war time, such as Semaphore signalling, morse code (we made our very own electrical circuits using our science knowledge to aid our communications!) and the art of code-breaking inspired by the world's very first computer - Enigma.
  • Finally, we used some DT skills to build our own Anderson shelter models.

We had a fantastic day, and we learnt lots about our WW2 topic, applied some of our science and DT skills as well as developed understanding of our SMSC question 'How did people in the past protect themselves?' - We did say it was jam-packed!
